City of Tehachapi Awarded Urban Greening Grant

SACRAMENTO – The California Natural Resources Agency today announced $24.7 million in funding for 20 infrastructure projects through the state’s Urban Greening program. The City of Tehachapi was awarded $889,300 for the Citywide Tree Planting and Stormwater Capture Project.

This grant will fund 474 trees with additional plants and stormwater capture along 2.5 miles of bike path and public spaces including the Curry Street Medians, Antelope Run Bike Trail, Valley Boulevard Bikeway, and Tehachapi Boulevard Bike Path. These projects will enhance open space by using natural solutions to improving air and water quality and reducing energy consumption while creating more walkable and bike-able trails.

“I am very proud of our City and the efforts brought forth by City staff to secure this grant for our community,” said Tehachapi Mayor Pro-Tem Susan Wiggins. “This funding will help us enhance our community by beautifying the Curry medians and the Tehachapi Boulevard bike path, both of which are key entry points to our City.”

Funded by Cap-and-Trade revenues, also known as the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund, the grants support projects that aim to reduce greenhouse gases by sequestering carbon, decreasing energy consumption and reducing vehicle miles traveled.

“This is another milestone for our City as we continue to enhance the quality of life in Tehachapi, said City Manager Greg Garrett. “Our development services team worked extremely hard on this proposal, there were a total of 84 proposals statewide, for Tehachapi to receive one of 20 grants is a testament to the quality of our project as viewed by the California Natural Resources Agency.”
